Free and total sulphite in beer Tlač E-mail

A new application has been developed for the laboratory analyser EcaFlow. Free sulphite as SO2 as well as total sulphite can be measured selectively and at low concentration levels by making use of a special electrode.

The EU directives set a limit of 20 mg/l for sulphite content in beer. Usually, a distillation-spectrophotometric method (Monier-Williams method) is used for the determination of sulphites, a reliable but time consuming and laborious procedure.

A much simpler and faster procedure has recently been developed for the laboratory analyser EcaFlow in cooperation with Czech and Slovak universities and a research institute. The method makes use of a special electrode developed by ISTRAN for dissolved sulphur dioxide and a membrane separator for elimination of possible interferences in the beer samples. The procedure has been tested and compared with the official methods. The new method exhibits superior properties in all parameters such as sample preparation, speed of analysis, reagent consumption, precision and accuracy. Additionally, the method can address free and total sulphite contents.
