ISTRAN's new technology for arsenic measurement in concentrated cadmium solutions in Sardinia

The misterious Nurage Loso

Cadmium is a byproduct in the production of zinc and owing to its toxic properties must be removed from waste materials, sludges prior to discharge. For most zinc ore materials may contain also arsenic, there is a danger that during the cadmium reduction procedure highly toxic and volatile arsine gas can be formed.

To minimise this threat, the arsenic level in the technological fluids containing concentrated cadmium sulphate must be reliably monitored. Since most analytical methods for low arsenic concentrations fail in such samples owing to the interfering effect of the high cadmium contents, on-line monitoring was not possible until now.

ISTRAN's new technology has solved this problem and enabled the measurement of total As at concentration levels of 10 to 200 ug/l in leaching solutions containing up to 50 g/l Cd (a ratio of about 1:1 000 000 !).  On installing the EcaMon 10 system in Portovesme (Sardinia, Italy) in 2002 the system is delivering data 4-6 times in an hour, launches an alarm signal on exceeding the threshold value, which makes the cadmium production safe. A remote control through a modem connection (now also through internet) is also available. The system does not require highly qualified operators and can operate in unattended mode for weeks.
